Creating a Campus Escape: Redesigning the Northwestern Polytechnic Student Association’s Lounge
November 5, 2024
In the heart of northwestern Alberta lies Northwestern Polytechnic (NWP), an institution rooted in innovation and growth. Formerly known as Grande Prairie Regional College, NWP has been shaping the region’s educational landscape since 1966. Its main campus is not only a hub for learning but also a celebrated architectural landmark, designed by renowned Canadian architect Douglas Cardinal. Known for its distinctive curves and integration with the natural landscape, the building is a testament to the institution’s commitment to innovation and creativity.
As Alberta's newest polytechnic, it offers a diverse range of academic pathways—from degree programs and trades training to adult education and continuing studies—while fostering a vibrant student community.
At the center of this community is the Northwestern Polytechnic Student Association (NWPSA), an independent entity dedicated to enhancing student life. Tasked with reimagining their outdated lounge and gathering space, the association turned to a trusted partner: CDI.
“They had a budget allocated and wanted to make something happen,” explained Derek Burrowes, Account Executive at CDI. “They reached out to us because of the strong relationship we’d already built with the college.”
This collaboration presented more than an opportunity for a refresh; it was a chance to redefine how student spaces inspire connection, relaxation, and productivity—all while reflecting the dynamic spirit of Northwestern Polytechnic.
A Campus Escape: Designing a Space with a “Non-School Vibe”
The NWPSA envisioned a student hub that felt distinct from traditional academic spaces. “They wanted something very different from classrooms and study areas,” said Burrowes. Their inspiration: a cozy, downtown coffee shop.
The goal was to create a space where students could unwind, socialize, and recharge. Words like cozy and comfy drove the design, prioritizing a welcoming atmosphere that would keep students on campus rather than seeking similar experiences elsewhere. “Rather than students heading off-campus, they wanted to offer that experience right here,” Burrowes added.
Beyond comfort, durability was key. The furniture had to balance inviting aesthetics with the practical demands of daily use in a high-traffic environment. The design also leveraged a large, light-filled atrium, blending cozy interiors with natural light to create a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor elements.
Collaborative Vision: From Ideas to a Design Students Could Love
When the Northwestern Polytechnic Student Association approached CDI, they came with an open mind and a challenge: “Here’s the space—what would you recommend?” recalled Burrowes.
CDI began with a deep dive into understanding how students would use the lounge. What brought them there? How long would they stay? What kinds of spaces would meet their needs?
Using CET design software, CDI translated these insights into renderings that brought the vision to life. “The renderings helped the student association visualize possibilities, refine ideas, and give detailed feedback,” said Burrowes. These collaborative iterations allowed the design to evolve into a plan that aligned perfectly with the association’s goals.
Remote collaboration was crucial, given the five-hour distance between Grande Prairie and CDI’s Edmonton office. Virtual meetings and design software enabled efficient communication and adjustments, ensuring the final design met every expectation.
Turning Constraints into Creativity
The project wasn’t without challenges. Structural pillars and curved walls broke up the lounge, initially presenting limitations. However, these features became an asset, allowing CDI to create distinct zones that students value.
“Students don’t want a big, open sea of furniture like an airport lounge,” Burrowes explained. “The pillars helped us create smaller, defined areas that feel more intimate and cozy, especially around key features like the fireplace, which adds a warm and inviting focal point to the space.”
Budget constraints also meant working within existing finishes, such as carpet and paint. The furniture selections had to complement these while introducing a modern, timeless aesthetic.
CDI designed a variety of settings to support different postures and needs. These include lounge-height seating for relaxation, seated-height workstations for focus, and bar/standing-height tables for social interaction. Unique pieces like “Pacman chairs,” which offer a playful rocking feature, and an S-shaped lounge piece for group gatherings added personality and flexibility.
“For students who want to curl up with their headphones or those who want to chat and play video games, the space supports both,” Burrowes noted.
A Space That Students Love
The results of the Northwestern Polytechnic Student Association’s lounge renovation speak for themselves. “To quote Tania, the lounge furniture is lovely,” shared Burrowes, “The students absolutely adore it.”
The students have embraced the lounge as a welcoming space to connect, unwind, and enjoy their time on campus.
For the NWPSA, the project delivered tangible value. Membership fees funded the renovation, and the finished space provides a return on investment that directly enhances the student experience. “They now have a space on campus that they like, that works for them,” Burrowes said. “That’s a win for everyone involved.”
By blending thoughtful design with practical functionality, CDI transformed an outdated lounge into a dynamic student hub—proving that even with constraints, great design can create lasting impact.
