Elements of a Digitally Enabled Space:
- Access to power. Students need places where they can recharge, along with their devices
- Access to areas where students can collaborate with their peers and instructors either in person, remotely through their connected devices, or a combination of both
- Furniture that can easily convert from “we” space to “me" space
- Multi-functional spaces where individuals can be “alone together”
- Learning spaces that are consistent with the Student-Centred Classrooms that they are familiar with
The Classroom Is Changing
Creating a New Generation of Digital Learners & Workers
The whole concept of how the classroom has been traditionally set up is obsolete. There is a whole new generation of people who have been raised on social media and expect instantaneous access to online data.
Something radical has happened in the last 15 years. It’s the digital transformation of our society. Google was founded in 1998, Facebook in 2004, and Twitter in 2006. The amount of change over the last two the last decades has been incredible.
What does all this mean? It means that there’s an entirely different way that people are receiving and transmitting information than ever before in the history of humankind. Students learn differently today and it’s impacting how classrooms should be structured and how the classroom should be taught.
Students who are in University now expect the same functional and flexible spaces when they enter the workforce. Today’s schools are emulating the workplace, and the workplace is emulating the schools. Much of this change is being driven from Silicon Valley; Google, LinkedIn, SnapChat, and Instagram offices are the work environments this generation of learners want to be part of. This sets a different expectation on how the school and the classroom should look and function.
Every aspect of the student’s daily life is becoming more digitally connected to the operation of the campus. For example, when the student arrives on campus, leaves a class, uses a laptop, buys lunch, or checks out a book they are connected the campus-wide environment.
Some day, there will be beacons that identify and talk to each individual student and assist them throughout their day. We’re just at the beginning of this technology transformation and the next ten years are going absolutely change the landscape of working and learning spaces.

How Can CDI Spaces Help You?
Let’s have a brainstorming session to Discover what you want to accomplish for your classroom or business. This is the first "D" in our process. We will figure out what your purpose is, what your goals are, and analyze the space plan for your space. A walkthrough of your space would be a very helpful tool in this process as well.
After this, we will come back with some ideas, and we will discuss the options together. If you need a budgetary quote on some items, we would be delighted to do that for you as well.
If you like, we can also schedule a time to take you on a site visit to show you some of our current projects. We also recommend a visit to our design centre, which will help you understand new trends and technology.
